Can you go to the Maldives without using Seaplanes?
If you’re concerned about travelling in a seaplane or would simply rather avoid it don’t worry.
The good news is you do not need to get a seaplane in the Maldives. There are many resorts islands accessible by a speedboat transfer from Malé.
You can also visit islands further afield by travelling on a domestic flight in a regular plane followed by a short boat journey.
If you’ve already made up your mind about seaplanes feel free to jump straight to our complete list of resorts that don’t need a seaplane transfer.
On the other hand, if you’re hesitant but undecided and want to find out more before making a decision, check out our extensive guide to seaplanes in the Maldives.
Who shouldn’t choose a seaplane?
Whilst seaplanes are an iconic part of the Maldives there are some people it doesn’t make sense for.
If you’re in one of these groups we’d recommend looking at resorts reachable by speedboat or by domestic transfer instead.
You have a physical disability that limits your mobility
You’ll need to be able to climb up and down a few steps, keeping in mind seaplanes float on the water and may be unsteady. Crew will do their best to assist you with boarding and exiting as well as handling your baggage.
You have a serious fear or anxiety about travelling smaller planes
With over 170 resorts to choose from you don’t need to put yourself through the journey if you know you won’t enjoy it. The Maldives is all about relaxing and unwinding!
Your international flights will arrive or depart at night
Seaplanes only fly during daylight hours. If you arrive after sunset or depart before sunrise you may need to spend a night at Malé. This could be an opportunity to explore the local culture, or it could be an unwanted delay. To avoid this, consider alternative travel times or transfer methods.
It’s your choice.
Travelling by seaplane is a fantastic experience for many, but there are plenty of options available to you if you’d rather avoid seaplanes.
