Airports in the Maldives

The area often referred to as Malé or Malé Airport actually comprises three islands: Malé, Hulhulé Island, and Hulhumalé.

Malé, Hulhulé and Hulhumalé

Malé is the capital city of the Maldives, while Hulhulé Island is home to Malé International Airport, officially known as Velana International Airport, as well as the seaplane terminals.

Hulhumalé is a reclaimed island known for its rapid development and residential areas. Although tourists can visit Malé and Hulhumalé, it is unlikely that they will have time to do so before their transfer.

The Sinamalé Bridge, also known as the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, connects Malé to Hulhulé Island, significantly enhancing accessibility between the capital city and Velana International Airport. This impressive engineering feat spans 2.1 kilometres and facilitates efficient transportation for both locals and tourists.

Malé International Airport (Velana International Airport)

Velana International Airport, the largest airport in the Maldives, plays a crucial role in the country's tourism industry, serving as the primary gateway for international travellers. Situated on Hulhulé Island near the capital city Malé, it is the main hub for nearly all incoming and outgoing flights, with the vast majority of tourists passing through its terminals. The airport's strategic importance is underscored by its extensive facilities, including international and domestic terminals, and various lounges and amenities designed to ensure a smooth travel experience. As the central transit point for visitors heading to the Maldives' numerous resorts and atolls, Velana International Airport is essential for maintaining the flow of tourists, thereby supporting the nation's economy and hospitality sector.

Other International Airports in the Maldives

In addition to Velana International Airport, the Maldives is served by several other international airports that enhance the country's connectivity and support its growing tourism industry. Although these airports are classified as international, they primarily function as domestic airports for transfers from Malé, providing essential connectivity to various parts of the archipelago. This ensures that visitors can easily access the diverse range of resorts and attractions spread across the country's many atolls.

The majority of international flights these airports accommodate are private jets or commercial flights from nearby countries such as Sri Lanka and India. This setup allows for efficient travel within the Maldives while maintaining some international links to neighbouring regions, further boosting the convenience and appeal of the Maldives as a premier travel destination.

Domestic Airports

The Maldives is served by several domestic airports scattered across its numerous atolls, making inter-island travel convenient and efficient. Key domestic airports include Dharavandhoo Airport in the Baa Atoll, Kooddoo Airport in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, and Ifuru in the Raa Atoll. These airports facilitate smooth connections between the islands, allowing travellers to reach their resorts and explore different parts of the country with ease.

Three domestic flight operators, Maldivian Airlines, FlyMe (Villa Air), and Manta Air, provide reliable and frequent services across the Maldives.

Seaplane Terminals

Seaplane transfers are a unique and popular mode of transportation in the Maldives, providing breath taking aerial views of the stunning atolls and turquoise lagoons. Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA), Maldivian, and Manta Air are currently the only operators of seaplane services, offering transfers to numerous resorts and guesthouses from the seaplane terminals on Hulhulé Island. The seaplane terminals are located adjacent to the main airport, ensuring seamless transitions for travellers. These scenic flights not only offer a quick and efficient way to reach remote resorts but also provide an unforgettable start to any Maldivian adventure.

Future Developments

The Maldivian government is continually investing in the expansion and modernization of its airport infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of tourists. Plans include the development of new domestic airports and the expansion of existing ones to enhance connectivity and accessibility. Additionally, upgrades to Malé International Airport are underway, with projects aimed at increasing passenger capacity, improving facilities, and enhancing overall efficiency. These developments are set to further boost the Maldives' reputation as a top-tier travel destination, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable travel experience for all visitors.
