Updated: 2024-05-28T13:02:47.944Z

In addition to Velana International Airport, the Maldives is served by several other international airports that enhance the country's connectivity and support its growing tourism industry.

Although these airports are classified as international, they primarily function as domestic airports for transfers from Malé. The majority of international flights they accommodate are private jets or commercial flights from nearby countries such as Sri Lanka and India. This setup ensures efficient connectivity for tourists travelling to various atolls and resorts within the Maldives, while still maintaining some international links to nearby regions.

Maafaru International Airport

Primarily catering to international private jets for those visiting the Northern Atolls, Maafaru International Airport also offers commercial flights from Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh. Located in the Noonu Atoll, it is one of the newest additions to the Maldivian aviation network, having opened in 2019. Maafaru International Airport features a modern runway capable of handling large aircraft, a well-equipped terminal, and facilities designed to accommodate international travellers. This airport plays a crucial role in boosting tourism in the northern atolls, providing direct access for private jets to luxury resorts and local islands in the region.

Hanimaadhoo International Airport

Hanimaadhoo, situated in the Haa Dhaalu Atoll in the northern Maldives, serves as a key gateway for travellers heading to the northern atolls from Malé, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The airport is undergoing significant expansion to upgrade its facilities and extend its runway, enabling it to handle larger international flights. This development aims to enhance the travel experience for tourists and support the economic growth of the northern atolls by facilitating better connectivity and accessibility.

Gan International Airport

Gan International Airport accepts flights from Colombo, Sri Lanka, as well as Malé. Located on Gan Island in the southern Addu Atoll, it was originally a Royal Air Force base during World War II and has since been transformed into a modern international airport. Gan International Airport provides vital air links to the southern atolls, which are unreachable by seaplane from Malé, and plays an instrumental role in promoting tourism and commerce in the region.

Villa International Airport

Situated on Maamigili Island in the South Ari Atoll (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll), Villa International Airport is privately owned by the Villa Group. This airport primarily serves as a domestic airport for tourists arriving via Malé, catering to those visiting the nearby resorts and guesthouses in the central Maldives. Although it is classified as an international airport, there are currently no international commercial flights operating.
