Domestic transfers in the Maldives involve short flights between Velana International Airport and various regional airports across the archipelago, facilitating easy access to more distant resorts. These flights are operated by local airlines and provide a quick, efficient alternative to seaplane transfers for reaching your island destination.

Getting to the Domestic Terminal

Upon arrival at Male Airport (Velana International Airport), after collecting luggage and heading to the arrivals hall, guests are greeted by resort or guesthouse representatives holding signs displaying the resort names. These representatives, sometimes referred to as airport butlers, assist in taking guests to the domestic terminal and help with checking luggage at the correct desk. This personalised service ensures a seamless and stress-free transition within the airport, enhancing the overall arrival experience in the Maldives.

All domestic flight transfers are organised by the resort or guesthouse. When guests arrive at the domestic terminal, they will be guided towards a waiting area or domestic lounge.

Not every resort uses domestic flights as a transfer method. Those that do have a contract with a particular airline, so you will not be able to choose which airline you fly with. There are three airlines that operate domestic flights in the Maldives: Maldivian, Manta Air, and FlyMe (Villa Air). All three airlines use air-conditioned ATR-72 turboprop aircraft, which hold around 70 passengers. However, there are also some other planes in use, such as ATR42, Airbus 320, Dash8-300, and Dash8-200. The majority of the seating on these planes is economy; however, some resorts use aircraft with business class seats available. All flights to domestic airports from Male range from 20 minutes to 95 minutes in duration.
