Seaplane Transfers

Seaplane transfers in the Maldives offer a unique and scenic way to reach your resort, providing breath taking aerial views of the stunning atolls and turquoise waters below. Transfers are an essential part of the Maldivian travel experience, ensuring swift and convenient connections between the main airport and remote island destinations.

Getting to the Seaplane Terminal

Upon arrival at Velana International Airport, after travellers collect their luggage and head to the arrivals hall, guests are greeted by resort or guesthouse representatives holding signs displaying the resort names. These representatives, sometimes referred to as airport butlers, assist in checking luggage at the correct desk and guide guests to a minibus, taxi, or private car for the quick five-minute ride to the seaplane terminals on the other side of the island. This personalized service ensures a seamless and stress-free transition from the international airport to the seaplane terminal, enhancing the overall arrival experience in the Maldives.

All seaplane transfers are organized by the resort or guesthouse. When guests arrive at the relevant terminal, a staff member will assist them with check-in and guide them to the correct waiting area or seaplane terminal lounge.

Seaplane Interiors

Interior of shared Seaplane

Not every resort uses seaplanes as a transfer method. Those that do will have a contract with a particular airline, so you will not be able to choose which airline you fly with unless you charter a private flight. All three airlines use DHC-6 Twin Otters, which usually have around 15 passenger seats unless they have been modified. Seaplane cockpits are designed to be open, allowing for enhanced visibility and ventilation for the pilots. This design facilitates easier communication and coordination during take-off, landing, and docking procedures, ensuring a smooth and safe operation. It also allows guests to watch the pilots in action, adding an element of excitement to their journey.

VIP Seaplane Interior

Some resorts have their own seaplanes with refurbished luxury interiors, often featuring fewer seats (8-10) to provide more space for each guest. The resorts with their own branded seaplanes still have them operated by one of the three seaplane airlines.

Luggage Allowance

Luggage allowance on seaplanes in the Maldives is typically more restrictive compared to international flights, with most operators allowing a combined weight of around 25 kg per passenger, including both checked and hand luggage. Excess baggage is subject to additional charges and may be transported on a later flight if space is unavailable. Due to space constraints and weight balance requirements on these smaller aircraft, it is advisable to pack light and consider the specific allowances and policies of the seaplane operator in advance.

Boarding the Seaplane

Boarding a seaplane

When it is time to board the seaplane, a staff member will collect your party from the waiting room or lounge and guide you down the jetty to the waiting aircraft. Your checked luggage will already be on board, and staff will be on hand to assist with your hand luggage if needed. Boarding the plane involves climbing a few steps, and similar to getting into a boat, there may be some movement as the plane is on water. The pilot and other staff members will be available to help you board.

Inside the shared seaplanes, there are typically single seats on one side and double seats on the other, with checked luggage piled in the back. There are three staff members on board: one in the back to tie up and untie the seaplane and close the doors, and two pilots up in the cockpit. Don’t be surprised if the pilots fly the plane barefoot. Most of the Maldives is a barefoot paradise, and you may find it easier to enter and exit the seaplane without your shoes!

There is no air conditioning in the seaplanes, but the airline provides bottles of water and earplugs as the planes are very loud. If you have young children, it is recommended to bring your own ear defenders.

Landing in a Seaplane

Seaplanes in the Maldives land gracefully on the water and then manoeuvre towards either jetty's or floating platforms for docking. Upon arrival, the planes are securely tied up to these structures using ropes and mooring cleats, ensuring stability and safety for passengers disembarking or boarding.

TMA seaplane at floating platform

If you arrive at a floating platform, there will be a dhoni (local ferry boat) or speedboat ready to collect you. Be sure to hold onto any railings as the platform can move. Resort staff will collect your luggage and help you into the boat before taking you to the arrivals jetty.

Seaplane at arrival jetty with staff

If the seaplane arrives at a resort jetty, resort staff will be there to greet you and assist with your luggage. You will then be able to walk directly to the island without needing a boat.
