Are Vaping Products banned in the Maldives?
In October 2024, the Maldivian government announced a comprehensive ban on vaping products, citing health concerns and the rising prevalence of vaping among the youth. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu directed authorities to prohibit the import of vaping devices and their components starting November 15, 2024. Subsequently, from December 15, 2024, the ban extended to the use, possession, manufacture, sale, advertising, and free distribution of vaping devices nationwide.[1]
This decision was influenced by mounting pressure from health organizations and community groups alarmed by the increasing use of vaping products, particularly among school-aged children. Reports indicated that vaping had become a method for introducing harmful substances to students, leading to incidents of bullying and coercion in schools. The Ministry of Education reported confiscating thousands of vape devices from schools over the past year, underscoring the severity of the issue.[3]
The ban also applies to tourists visiting the Maldives. Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihsan confirmed that from November 15, 2024, tourists attempting to bring vape devices into the country would have them intercepted at the border. Furthermore, from December 15, 2024, tourists are prohibited from using vape devices within the Maldives. The government has no plans to offer special provisions or exceptions for tourists regarding this ban.[3]
The World Health Organization (WHO) welcomed the Maldivian government's decision, highlighting concerns over the prevalence of vaping among young people. The WHO reiterated that all forms of tobacco use are harmful and increase the risk of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, and diabetes. The organization's South-East Asia Regional Office expressed support for the timely decision to ban vape imports in the Maldives.[4]
